RE: Monterey CA to Seal Beach CA

What time on Sunday are you planning on arriving. Anytime in the afternoon and you're going to hit a lot traffic on the 405 around LAX. You might want to consider taking the 210 east across to the 605 south which will put right down in Seal Beach.

RE: How Big?

We've got a SRW F-350 with a Lance 845 ..... 2200lbs plus 500 to 800lbs wet and loaded with camping gear. I waited to add air bags and ranchos and I could not believe what a difference it made. Before we added them it was very uncomfortable driving...... I don't understand why you don't want to add them.... if it's cost, I'd at least add the ranchos.

RE: Camper without a dinette?

I don't know about a bigger bath, but my wife hates the dinette except for a few rainy times that we have eaten inside. She finally convinced me to pull out the table and only use it when really needed.... it is nice to have more of a sofa space.

RE: Travel on California Rt. 1

Seems like I remember some white knuckle grades near Paso Robles.
jr
You may be referring to the Questa grade between Paso Robles and SLO .... they've made improvements 4 or 5 years ago, but it you cut over to the coast on 46 you'll avoid it. 46 is a very easy drive with beautiful views as you approach the coast.

RE: Securing bicycles

We've been using a ladder rack (I think from Camping World) for the last 5 years for our 2 bikes and haven't had any problems with the ladder. The rack came with straps to keep the bikes stable but bungie cords would probably work as well.

RE: Travel on California Rt. 1

The only section that you may want to avoid is the Big Sur section..... from Carmel down to Cambria, lots of 15mph white knuckle turns. You can cut over to the 101 south of Santa Cruz and then take 46 Paso Robles over to Cambria on the coast.
We travel to Big Sur a lot coming from the south and even in our camper I prefer to miss that section of highway. If you want to see some of that coastline and have some extra time, take the 25 mile trip from Carmel to Big Sur...... there's a few tight slow turns, but nothing like the road south of Big Sur.

RE: Short bed camper, who's do you like?

We have a Lance 845 on F-350 SRW.... been real happy with the setup and how it handles on the road (we did add ranchos and air bags). We camped with 3 but I think with a forth it would get real crowded. I guess it depends on how much time you plan on being inside the camper.
If I was camping with 4, I'd probably consider the Lance 861... although with the extra 1000 lbs I'm not sure about the handling.

RE: Legoland and....any ideas?

A few more ideas for you......
Torrey Pines State Reserve, just north of La Jolla (20 min. south of Carlsbad) is a beautiful place to hike around..... and cheap :B Speaking of cheap entertainment.... the Torrey Pines Glider Port South of the Reserve is fun place to watch the parasails and hang gliders..... close up view of them jumping off the cliffs.....just don't let the kids venture down to Black's Beach below.....it's a nude beach :E
If you're staying in Carlsbad you might want to check out Oceanside Harbor (10 min. north of Carlsbad) if you're considering going out on a boat.... whale watching or fishing. They also have kayak and jet ski rentals.

RE: Legoland and....any ideas?

When are you going to Carlsbad and where are you staying? Last year we camped at South Carlsbad Beach in January and we watched the whales from our campsite!
I also recommend The Wild Animal Park.... something different from your typical zoo. If you're looking for low cost things to do .... the beach is the best... no matter what time of year, there's a good chance of warm sunny days.
La Jolla Cove is a great place to watch sea lions.... there's a shell shop at the bottom of Prospect Street that has a cave that goes down 50ft to the water below.... very cool for kids.
Old Towne in San Diego has a lot of fun museums for kids and lots of good food and shops.
Cabrillo National Monument at Point Loma is an inexpensive place to learn about early history of San Diego...... it also has a great view of San Diego Bay as well as the Pacific Ocean..... maybe even some whales.

RE: Best place to buy propane heaters & porta-potti's

I saw the Mr Heaterlast week at Camping World for less than $90.00. Unless you're in Canada it's approved for indoor use. It has an automatic low oxygen shut-off system.

We've gone 5 days dry camping without needing to recharge. It's about our limit on our holding tanks and water as well.
When we run the heater 3 days is about our limit.

I love to BBQ ....... usually something different every night we're out..... a few of my favorites are Cornish game hens, rack of lamb, salmon fillets and for the upcoming Thanksgiving dinner it has to be a turkey on the Weber.

RE: purchasing (financing) your RV & TV: how'd you do it?

We were able to pay cash for the camper but we used Ford Credit for the new truck.... I believe it was 1.9% which is tough to get from a bank.

RE: co-owning vs one owner

We've been co-owners in a beach condo for the past 20 some years.... all in all it's worked out great.... we have a schedule to rotate our time and have a list of our "rules" that everyone seems to obey for the most part.
But an RV..... especially a Class A or Class C, it seems like there's too many things that have to be done on the upkeep and dividing the responsibilities would be tough. It would probably be a lot easier if it were a 5th wheel or travel trailer.
Each of you having your own and RVing together sounds like a better idea.

RE: Camp Fire Wood

I cook with charcoal in my own grill, I bring from home. After cooking, I dump the coals into the fire ring and use them to start the campfire. On nights we don't grill, I either use homemade fire starters or cheat and use a Sterno type log. Those artificial logs will definitely start a fire. On occasion, I have bought firewood that turned out to be less than optimally cured. Those artificial logs are the only things I've seen that will start wood that's not well cured.
We've used the artificial logs a few times....but I've found that dumping a nice layer of hot charcoal will keep just about any uncured wood going and the charcoal is usually still going in the morning. For 4 or 5 days we usually go through a couple of the 20lb charcoal bags for cooking and fires.

RE: The California Adventure - Part 5 - The Avenue of the Giants

Joe,
Thanks for the great report! The Avenue of the Giants is one beautiful area.
We've been driving up from So Cal the last 3 years in May to run in the Avenue of the Giants Marathon. We always stay at Burlington...... one of the best treats on marathon day is that the Ave is shut down to motor vehicles. After I've run the race, my wife and I go for a bike ride on the empty Avenue of the Giants.
Talking about the high water marks...... I don't know if you noticed but you can see the change in color on the bark of the redwoods in Burlington that was left by the flooding.
